Hurghada is a city located on the Red Sea coast of Egypt. Thanks to its temperate climate, unspoilt beaches, dramatic landscape and proximity to fun activities like scuba diving and snorkelling Hurghada is a popular tourist destination for domestic and foreign visitors alike.

Until recently it was little more than a fishing village but thanks to tourism you’ll now find a fun city bristling with life.

Things to do

Mahmya, part of the Giftun islands which are known as the Caribbean of Africa, is just a short boat ride away from Hurghada. You can take a cruise in the clear blue waters and then enjoy snorkelling or diving around the island before relaxing on the pristine beaches.

Mahmya is always a favourite with couples and families and, although this is a quiet island, there is a bar and restaurant where you can enjoy a cold drink or grab a bite to eat whilst taking in the view and sit amongst the many shaded areas thanks to the palm trees.

Sheraton Street is the most famous street in Hurghada. If you’re a shopaholic then this is place fro you. Here you can buy whatever you’re after: from sunglasses and flip-flops to furniture and fine art.

You’ll find all kinds of bazaars and, unlike in other North African cities like Marrakech, the shopkeepers are unlikely to hassle you. The ambience is cool and vibrant and there are plenty of places for you to enjoy some food whilst you peruse the wares.

If you’re a family with children or a water-park fanatic then Makadi Water World is a must. Just a 45 minute drive down the coast from central Hurghada, Makadi Water World is an impressive water park with hundreds of slides and attractions to suit the whole family, no matter how brave or timid!

The place is known for being well-organised with friendly staff and rides that cater to all ages from 2 years upwards. Dolphin shows are held daily.

New Son Bijou Driving Centre is a friendly, professional and above-all exciting diving service provided in the centre of Hurghada just off El-Bahr street. You will be picked up by the diving team, select your gear from the diving centre and then go out on one of the comfortable and spacious boats. They will provide tea, coffee and any other refreshments you may need.

Whether you’re looking for a snorkelling experience or wanting to pass your diving certificates the team will help you along in comfortable and easy steps. The waters surrounding Hurghada are clear, temperate and known for their wealth of wild marine life such as dolphins, turtles and yellow-striped cardinal fish.

For something truly different visit the Sand City just north-west of Hurghada. This is a miniature city of beautifully crafted sand sculptures of all different kinds of things: imposing pharoahs, grand pyramids, alluring sphinxes and many more.

Always a hit with kids, Sand City would make a good morning or afternoon out. There are also sculptures of more modern art and popular figures such as Spider-man. It also has a modest gift shop.

• Snorkeling is a fun way to spend the day, and a good chance to play in the sea and see fish, especially if you’re not up for diving.

• Drive a quad bike into the “desert”, where you meet members of a Bedouin tribe, observe their way of life and watch the sunset. It’s made to sound a lot better than it is, but it’s a fun day.

• In a safari trip you could feel the real East African lifestyle by driving among the Desert Mountains, under the powerful sun, having nothing in your mind but just joy and the image of a cold steamed bottle of water.

• There are many corals surrounding Hurghada, you can choose! Whatever you pick, you won’t regret it.

• Visit the main mosque in Hurghada but keep in mind that only men can go in.
